Abell’s is proud to present items from the famous Owlwood Estate in the Holmby Hills of Los Angeles. The auction will include fine art, furniture & decorative goods, and carpets, donated by its former owner to Habitat for Humanity and sold to benefit their ongoing mission of eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide.
Owlwood was designed in 1937 by architect Robert D. Farquhar for businessman C.H. Quinn.
Subsequent owners of Owlwood include 20th Century Fox Chairman Joseph Schenck and, later, oil baron William Keck, Tony Curtis, Cher & Sonny Bono. According to the Los Angeles Times: “Further adding to its pedigree, Marilyn Monroe was known to frequent Owlwood as a guest.” The sellers of Owlwood, who donated the items we are selling on behalf of Habitat for Humanity, purchased two adjacent estates to form a combined estate of over 10 acres. Owners of one of the adjacent estates include Jayne Mansfield and Englebert Humperdinck. The other adjacent estate was once owned by Esther Williams and it is this estate’s pool house that was retained as the pool house for the newly combined Owlwood estate.
